Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is surgery done to improve the look of the abdomen (stomach area), making it look smooth and taut. It may involve removing excess skin, tightening the muscles or a combination of both.

There are several variations of abdominoplasty.

Full abdominoplasty - is done when there is a lot of loose skin. The excess skin is excised  and the remaining skin is stretched and sutured.
Mini abdominoplasty -  is done when there is only a small amount of excess skin. This is excised and the remaining skin sutured. Endoscopic abdominoplasty - is done mainly to tighten the abdominal muscles.

The surgery is done under general anaesthesia. You may need to stay in hospital for a day or two. Your surgeon may leave drains (small pipes) in the operated area to drain the excess fluid or blood. These will be usually removed  the next day. You could return to normal activities by 6 weeks. Any strenuous activity should be avoided for 6 weeks. You could return to work in about 2 weeks. The results will continue to improve till about 6 months post surgery. You must eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to maintain the result.

Complications of the procedure include pain, bleeding, infection, scarring and blood clots.

Make sure to get answers to all your questions at the consultation with your surgeon, so that you are fully satisfied about the procedure.
