What is plastic surgery? Is this the same as cosmetic surgery?

Plastic surgery is ‘The process of reconstructing or repairing parts of the body by the transfer of tissue, either in the treatment of injury or for cosmetic reasons.’ Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons are trained to use their surgical skill and techniques to repair and reconstruct parts of body. When this is used for enhancing appearance, it is called cosmetic surgery.

Is it true that the popularity of cosmetic surgery is increasing worldwide?

Yes, surveys have shown that all cosmetic surgery procedures are more in demand across the globe. The overall improvement in lifestyle and nutrition with increased longevity, have meant older people are healthier and want to feel and look younger. The younger population too, are more aware of their body image and are happy to use cosmetic surgery to enhance their looks. This improves their self esteem and confidence and thereby their career.

What do I do if I am not sure if I need cosmetic surgery?

If you are not happy with certain aspects of your look, you should arrange a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. He will listen to your concerns, examine yioy and then guide you on whether you would benefit from any cosmetic procedure.

How do I know which surgeon is good?

The most important decision in your cosmetic surgery journey, is the choice of your surgeon. Take time to make your choice. Check the credentials well - training received, years of experience, courses / conferences attended, approachability, ease of access of clinic and helpfulness of staff.

Will there be no scars after cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgeons have years of training to operate with minimal trauma and scarring. The scars post surgery are neat and usually fade with time. Creams and ointments are available to apply, which help with healing. But like everything in life, cosmetic surgery has certain limitations. In some cases, minimal scarring may remain. This is inevitable and if any surgeon says otherwise, he/she is not parting with the whole truth.

Do I need to take someone with me?

You can come alone for the consultation, if you feel more comfortable and will be able to speak more freely. It is always advisable to bring a responsible adult along when coming for surgery.

How long do I have to be off work?

This depends on the procedure being undertaken. Also, different people have variable healing and recovery time. Your surgeon will discuss this with you and guide you during the consultation.
